6Then they gathered around him and asked him, "LORD, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?"
Thoughts of verse
The disciples understandably were expecting that kingdom to be set up immediately, and hence their excited enquiry: is it at this time You are restoring Israel's kingdom?'
The kingdom of God is spiritual, not political. Let us focus on the spiritual aspects of the kingdom.
Jesus had taught, also, about the spiritual nature of the kingdom. The kingdom of God was both present (Luke 17:20-21) and future. Apparently, the disciples did not understand that the spiritual kingdom, during the church age, would expand and grow without the political theocracy being established.
As followers of Christ we should be concerned about power. But the power that concerns us should be the power to do Good. We are daily confronted with a hostile world. We must rely on the Holy Spirit who is a powerful persuader. He alone can draw men and women to Christ.
The element of power is vital to life. People everywhere are concerned about it. Many people want power for power's sake rather than power to serve others. This approach leads to corruption and disaster.
As followers of Christ, our desire is to build up the kingdom of Christ. Christ has promised to empower us with the Holy Spirit. As we behave, we can have a positive and life transforming influence in the world.
Lord help us to get to know you and become closer to you each day. Help us to be like Christ: kind, generous, forgiving and compassionate. In the name of Jesus, Amen.
